Lingashtakam Meaning

I had recently posted the Lingashtakam lyrics after hearing it during Maha Shivaratri mid-night rudra pooja at Whitefield Devi Karumariamman Temple. I thought I will learn the lyrics but it was difficult as the words are in Sanskrit. So, a little research and would like to share the word by word Lingashtakam meaning in English. You can find the close similarity between Tamil and Sanskrit in a few places. After knowing the meaning, it is easy to learn Lingashtakam. As it helped me learn, I am sharing with you all too. Please do let me know in the comments, if this helps you as it will help me give you more useful and relevant content.

Lingashtakam Meaning Ashtakam 1

  1. Brahmamurāri: This compound word consists of two parts:
    • Brahma: Refers to Lord Brahma, the creator in Hindu mythology.
    • Murāri: Another name for Lord Krishna, who is known for defeating the demon Mura. Here, it symbolizes the destroyer aspect of Lord Shiva.
  2. Surārcita: Surā means gods or celestial beings, and arcita means worshipped. So, surārcita signifies that the linga (Shiva’s form) is revered by the gods.
  3. Liṅgaṁ: The linga represents Lord Shiva in his formless, eternal aspect. It is a symbol of the divine energy and consciousness.
  4. Nirmala: Pure and immaculate. The linga is described as being free from impurities.
  5. Bhāsita: Adorned or anointed. The linga is beautifully adorned.
  6. Śōbhita: Radiant and glorious. The linga shines with divine brilliance.
  7. Janma: Birth. The linga is the destroyer of the cycle of birth and rebirth.
  8. Jaduḥkha: Sorrow caused by ignorance. The linga alleviates suffering.
  9. Vināśaka: The one who destroys. The linga destroys the bonds of ignorance.
  10. Tatpraṇamāmi: I bow down to that linga.
  11. Sadā: Always.
  12. Śiva: Lord Shiva, the auspicious one.

In summary, this verse praises Lord Shiva as the eternal, pure, and radiant linga, revered by gods, capable of destroying suffering and ignorance. It invites us to bow down to this divine form always. 🙏🕉️
