Performing Shiva Pooja at home is a cherished ritual for many devotees seeking the blessings of Lord Shiva. While daily worship is always beneficial, there are specific days and times considered highly auspicious for performing Shiva Pooja. These periods hold special significance and are believed to amplify the spiritual benefits of the rituals. Let’s explore these auspicious days and times in detail.

Mondays

Mondays, or Somvar, are traditionally dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed that worshiping Shiva on Mondays pleases Him and brings His blessings. This day is associated with the moon, which has a special connection with Lord Shiva, known as Chandrashekhara (the one who wears the moon on His head). Devotees observe fasts, chant mantras, and offer prayers to Lord Shiva on Mondays to seek His grace and fulfill their desires.

Best Time for Shiva Pooja on Mondays:

  • Morning: The Brahma Muhurta, approximately one and a half hours before sunrise, is considered the most auspicious time for worship.
  • Evening: The time around sunset, known as Sandhya Kala, is also auspicious.

Rituals to Follow on Mondays:

  • Wake up early, take a bath, and wear clean clothes.
  • Visit a Shiva temple or create a sacred space at home.
  • Offer water, milk, and bilva (bael) leaves to the Shiva Lingam.
  • Chant the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra or Om Namah Shivaya.
  • Light a diya (lamp) and incense sticks.

Monthly Shivaratri

Shivaratri, or the night of Shiva, occurs once every month on the 14th night of the waning moon (Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi). This day is especially significant for Shiva devotees. It is believed that performing Shiva Pooja on this night can destroy all sins and lead to spiritual growth.

Best Time for Shiva Pooja on Monthly Shivaratri:

  • Night: The most auspicious time is during the Nishita Kala, which is the midnight period. This time is considered highly potent for spiritual practices and meditation.

Rituals to Follow on Monthly Shivaratri:

  • Observe a fast throughout the day, consuming only water or fruits.
  • Perform Abhishekam (ritual bathing) of the Shiva Lingam with water, milk, honey, and other sacred substances.
  • Chant Shiva Mantras, especially the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra.
  • Offer flowers, fruits, and sweets to the deity.
  • Stay awake and meditate on Lord Shiva throughout the night.

Pradosham

Pradosham is observed on the 13th day (Trayodashi) of both the waxing and waning moon phases. This period is considered highly auspicious for worshiping Lord Shiva. The term “Pradosham” refers to the time of dusk, which is believed to be the time when Lord Shiva performed the cosmic dance, Tandava.

Best Time for Shiva Pooja on Pradosham:

  • Evening: The Pradosham time, approximately 1.5 hours before sunset (4.30 PM – 6.30 PM), is the ideal period for worship.

Rituals to Follow on Pradosham:

  • Fast from sunrise to sunset.
  • Perform Abhishekam during the Pradosham time.
  • Offer bilva leaves, sandalwood paste, and flowers to the Shiva Lingam.
  • Recite the Shiva Panchakshara Stotra (Om Namah Shivaya) and Shiva Gayatri Mantra.
  • Light a lamp and offer naivedyam (sacred food) to the deity.

Pournami

Pournami, or the full moon day, is another auspicious day for performing Shiva Pooja. The full moon is believed to have a strong influence on the mind, and worshiping Lord Shiva on this day can help in attaining mental peace and clarity.

Best Time for Shiva Pooja on Pournami:

  • Evening: The period of dusk (Sandhya Kala) and the time when the moon is rising are considered ideal for worship.

Rituals to Follow on Pournami:

  • Take a bath in the early morning and wear clean clothes.
  • Create a sacred space at home or visit a Shiva temple.
  • Offer milk, curd, honey, and bilva leaves to the Shiva Lingam.
  • Chant the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra or Om Namah Shivaya.
  • Perform aarti and offer prasad (sacred food).

If you have a conch, blow it at the start and end of Shiva pooja and ring bells throughout the pooja time. If you cannot do such elaborate poojas, visit a nearby Shiva temple and meditate for 5-10 minutes.
