Who is Varahi Amman

January 23, 2024 by Vidhyaa Leave a Comment

We have already seen many posts on Varahi Amman and suddenly you may ask why now this blog about “Who is Varahi Amman”. But let me tell you –

We all know the song “Mangala Roopini Madhiyani Soolini” right? One of the most powerful and extremely pleasant to hear Hindu devotional song dedicated to Goddess Kamatchi (Parvati Devi). I love singing this song and sing it most while doing the dishes. While I had been singing the song for many many years now, only now I realised the word “Panchami” is the song. So, as we all know Varahi amman is none other than Devi Parvati only. So – here goes the song lines –

பஞ்சமி, பைரவி, பர்வத புத்திரி, பஞ்சநல் பாணியளே!
கொஞ்சிடும் குமரனைக் குணம்மிகு வேலனைக் கொடுத்த நல் குமரியளே!
சங்கடம் தீர்த்திடச் சமரது செய்த நல் சக்தி எனும் மாயே!
ஜெய ஜெய சங்கரி! கௌரி கிருபாகரி! துக்க நிவாராணி காமாக்ஷி!

Here is the word by word meaning of mangala roopini –

பஞ்சமி: Panchami refers to the fifth day of the lunar month, and it is often considered auspicious. In the context of this song, we can understand that Parvati Amman is praised here as the Panchami who is noone other Varahi Amman.

பைரவி: Bhairavi is a form of the goddess Parvati, often associated with fierce and protective aspects. The word here signifies the worship of the divine feminine energy.

பர்வத புத்திரி: Parvata Putri translates to “Daughter of the Mountain,” referring to Parvati, who is the daughter of the Himalayas. Parvati is another name for the goddess Shakti.

பஞ்சநல் பாணியளே: Panchanal Paaniyale literally means “One who holds the Ganges in her hands.” This phrase symbolizes the goddess Ganga, the sacred river.

Now, the next set of lines shifts to a different deity:

கொஞ்சிடும் குமரனைக் குணம்மிகு வேலனைக் கொடுத்த நல் குமரியளே This part of the verse praises Lord Murugan, also known as Kumaran, who holds the powerful weapon called Vel. The devotee seeks the blessings of the benevolent Kumari (a name for the divine mother) who gave the Vel to the virtuous Kumaran.

சங்கடம் தீர்த்திடச் சமரது செய்த நல் சக்தி எனும் மாயே: This line acknowledges the divine power (Shakti) that vanquished obstacles and troubles. It refers to the Goddess as the miraculous force that has accomplished victory in battles.

ஜெய ஜெய சங்கரி! கௌரி கிருபாகரி! துக்க நிவாராணி காமாக்ஷி!: This part is a series of invocations, praising different aspects of the goddess. “Jaya Jaya Sangari” hails Lord Shiva, “Gauri Krupakari” praises the compassionate Goddess Gauri (another name for Parvati), and “Thukka Nivaarani Kaamaakshi” seeks the grace of the Goddess Kamakshi, who dispels sufferings.
