Om Mahishadwajayai Vidmahe – Varahi Gayatri Mantra Meaning

November 14, 2023 by Vidhyaa Leave a Comment

We have seen many posts on Varahi amman, Varahi pooja at home, and Varahi Gayatri mantra and Varahi Moola Mantra. While I have earlier stated the lyrics and overall meaning of Om Mahishadwajayai Vidmahe gayatri Mantra, I have included the meaning in this post so that it gets easier to learn for you. For words that are used in other mantras as well, I have included references so that it gets even more easy to understand and remember.

Om Mahishadwajayai Vidmahe gayatri Mantra

Om Mahishadwajayai Vidmahe

  • Om: The primordial sound, representing the essence of the ultimate reality.
  • Mahishadwajayai: Refers to Mahishadwaja, which can be interpreted as the one who has a flag with the emblem of a buffalo. Mahisha is often associated with the buffalo demon, and Dhwaja means flag. So, this part of the mantra can be understood as “I meditate upon the one with the flag of victory over Mahisha.”

Dhandahasthaya Dheemahi:

  • Dhandahasthaya: The one who holds a staff or rod (Danda) in her hand. hasthaya means hand. We can see this word in Dhanvantri mantra for good health too where we praise Lord Dhavantri as “Amirtha Kala Hasthaya” which means the One who holds the eternal nectar pot in His hands.Dheemahi: We contemplate or meditate upon.
Therefore, this part can be translated as “We meditate upon the one who holds the staff (symbolizing authority or power).”

Thanno Varahi Prachodhayat:

  • Thanno: We invoke or pray to.Varahi: Refers to the goddess Varahi.Prachodhayat: May she inspire or direct.
In this part, it is a prayer asking Varahi to inspire or guide us.
