Every month, Hindus around the world observe a special day dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the beloved elephant-headed deity. Celebrated on the fourth day (Chaturthi) of the waning moon (Krishna Paksha) of each lunar month, this auspicious occasion is known as Sankatahara Chathurthi, meaning “Remover of Obstacles.”
Significance of Sankatahara Chathurthi:
Lord Ganesha, also known as Ganapati, is widely revered as the remover of obstacles and the bestower of success. Sankatahara Chathurthi is a day to seek his blessings for overcoming challenges, removing hurdles in our path, and attaining prosperity and happiness. Devotees believe that observing this vrat (fast) with sincerity and devotion can bring positive changes in their lives and help them achieve their goals.
Observing Sankatahara Chathurthi:
The rituals associated with Sankatahara Chathurthi may vary slightly depending on region and tradition. However, some common practices include:
- Fasting: Many devotees observe a strict or partial fast throughout the day, consuming only fruits, nuts, and milk.
- Puja: In the evening, a puja (worship) is performed for Lord Ganesha. The idol is bathed, adorned with fresh flowers and Durva grass(Arugam pul in Tamil), and offered modaks (sweet dumplings) his favorite food. Mantras like Vakrathunda Mahakaya, Ganesha Gayatri Mantra and hymns like Vinayagar Agaval, Aindhu Karathanai are chanted, and prayers are offered for guidance, protection, and good fortune.
- Moon Darshan: After the puja, devotees break their fast by offering water to the moon and then consuming food.
Angaraki Sankashti Chaturthi:
If Sankatahara Chaturthi falls on a Tuesday, it is considered especially auspicious and is known as Angaraki Sankashti Chaturthi. Devotees believe that worshipping Lord Ganesha on this day brings even greater blessings and fulfills their wishes.
