In Hinduism, the ritual of Varalakshmi Vratam, also known as Varamahalakshmi Puja or simply Varalakshmi Pooja is performed to appease the goddess of prosperity known as Lakshmi. The name of this ritual literally translates to “vow to the Lakshmi who offers boons.” The manifestation of Lakshmi known as Varalakshmi is the one who bestows blessings (vara). A puja, or religious ceremony, that is typically carried out in the states of South India by married Hindu women. This event is celebrated on the Friday that comes right before the Hindu calendar day known as Purnima, which occurs during the month of Shravana. Just as we do any other pooja, always start the Varamahalakshmi Pooja with a prayer seeking the blessings of Lord Ganesha.
What to do if I am travelling or unable to do the Varamahalakshmi pooja on the vrat date due to reasons like functions or periods?
You can do it on one of the other Fridays of the Shravan month. Do the pooja by keeping kalasam, chant mantras, invite odd number of sumangalis and give them thamboolam.
