Thiruvadhirai or Arudra Darbar, is a Hindu festival celebrated in the Tamil month of Margazhi (December-January). It is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and the main event involves the worship of the cosmic dance of Lord Shiva, known as the “Ananda Tandava” or “Arudra Tandava.” On this particular day, there is a special alignment of the planets and the Arudra Darisanam Thiruivadhirai 2023 day falls on the full moon day in the month of Margazhi. The auspicious day is majorly observed in South India, especially at the Chidambaram Nataraja Temple.
Arudra Darisanam Thiruivadhirai 2023
Thiruvathirai Nakshathram Starts = 10:21 PM on 26-December-2023
Thiruvathirai Nakshathram Ends = 11:28 PM on 27-December-2023
Purnima begins at 5:47 am on December 26, 2023
Purnima ends at 6:03 am on December 27, 2023
Hence the celestial time before 6.03 AM on December 27, 2023 is actually the best time to pray to Lord Shiva.

So, it would be a good idea to do Brahma Muhurtha Pooja for Lord Shiva on Dec 27th to get Lord Shiva’s blessings. Many Tamil people observe fast and prepare kali ( traditional dish prepared during the Arudra Darisanam festival) as prasad during this day. In my native in Sivakasi, we have not observed any such particular rituals on this auspicious. This year, I wish to start doing a simple pooja for Lord Shiva and this is my plan –
- Wake up, take bath, and put margazhi kolam by 5.15 AM.
- Light dhiyas outside on either side of the door.
- Light a ghee dhiya for Lord Shiva.
- Offer betel leaves and fruits.
- Offer milk.
- Burn sambrani + kungiliyum.
- Start with ganesh mantra, kula deivam mantra, then the first paragrah of kolaru padhigam.
- Then, sankalpam. (Kindly letting God know why I am doing the pooja).
- Chant Sivapuranam, Maasil Veenaiyum, and Valaindhadha Villu.
- Do dhoop and karpoor arti.
- Sing mangalam and finish the pooja.
