Vaikasi Visakam is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Murugan. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva and Parvati wanted a son who would be strong and powerful, and who would protect the world from evil. Shiva prayed to Lord Brahma, who granted him a boon. Shiva then took a flaming seed from his third eye and placed it in a pot of water. The seed grew into six babies, who were then taken care of by the six Karthigai nymphs. The babies were then united into one child, who was named Murugan.

How to celebrate Vaikasi Visakam 2023 at home
- Clean the pooja shelf, lamps, idols, and photo frames a day prior itself.
- Apply turmeric/sandalwood paste and kumkum tilak for all the pictures and idols.
- On the Vaikasi Vikasam date 2023 (June 2) , wake up early and take a bath.
- Offer 6 ghee dhiyas for Lord Murugan.
- Lord Murugan loves chevvarali flowers (red Nerium Oleander flowers). And so, decorate him lavishly with Oleander flowers. If you don’t get oleander, offer any fsweet smelling flower that you can get.
- Offer milk and a sweet (Chakkara Pongal/Kesari) as Neivediyam.
- Light dasangam powder, panchakavya vilakku or incense sticks.
- If you have an idol, do abhishekam with milk, honey, fruits, and panchamirtham. If you have only a picture, offer a tumbler of milk with palm sugar added in it.
- Do aarti and pray soulfully.
- Sing songs like Kandha Sashti Kavasam, Kandha Guru Kavasam, Kandhar Anubhudhi or any devotional song dedicated to Lord Murugan.
- All through the day, keep chanting “Om Saravana Bhava Om” and Murugan Gayatri mantra.
- Those who can fast for the whole day by consuming fruits and milk and end the fast after evening prayer.
