Fragrance has a very special role in our pooja. The divine fragrance creates a soothing, positive atmosphere and helps one connect with the Supreme. In earlier days people used sambhrani as the prime source of fragrance in poojas along with various other pleasant smelling substances like rose water, cardamom and other spices. Later it was replaced by incense sticks and computer sambhrani. I have never been a fan of the commercially available incense sticks as I felt it has always been choking me with its fragrance. I then used to put sambhrani on days I can by burning the coconut shells and sprinkling the sambhrani powder over it. The smell of sambhrani is heavenly and one can feel the same vibes of the temple at home on days when you put sambhrani. While you need to have regular supply of dried coconut shells with you, it is also time consuming to do on a daily basis. That was when I started seeing so many Youtube videos about dasangam powder.

What is dasangam powder made of?
What goes inside the making of dasangam powder is still not very clear to me as the packaging boxes that I bought did not have them listed on the cover.
How to use dasangam powder?
Dasangam powder usually come is plastic packets put inside a small carton box. Transfer the contents of the packet into a wide box. The package will also contain a cone. Take the cone and fill the dasangam powder in it. Now tap it gently on to a flat surface. The powder takes the cone shape and you can remove the plastic cone. (If you were one of the lucky ones who had played in sand pit by making coconut shell idlis, it is something similar to it) You can light the powder directly. The dasangam powder cone catches the flame naturally. Carefully turn off the flame once the powder starts emitting the fragrance. You can now show this as dhoop to the gods during your pooja time.
