Sitting on a Lotus flower with a Veena in Her hand, Devi Saraswati is the Goddess of Wisdom, Knowledge, and all 64 arts. She is worshipped on the 9th day of Dusshera in Tamil Nadu. This holy day is also known as Ayudha Pooja. Ayudha means tools/ instruments in Tamil and on this day, people worship the tools used in their businesses and the vehicles at home and seek Mother Saraswati’s blessings. Students also keep their books and notebooks on this day for pooja to gain Maa Saraswati’s abundant consecration. This year, Saraswati Poojai or Ayudha Pooja falls on October 25,2020 Sunday.
How to celebrate Ayudha Poojai at home:
Clean the house, altar, and vehicles in the morning of Saraswati Pooja Day or a day before.
In the evening, place the kids’ books, and the tools that you use at the office in the pooja room. Tools also mean your revenue-generating things like laptops, silk thread tools, cameras, or whatever that you use. After arranging them, place a clean yellow or white cloth (a new and clean dhoti will do) over these covering them. This will also make a stand for the Goddess idol or picture.
On the spread cloth, place the idol or picture of Goddess Saraswati. Apply turmeric and kumkum tilak or her forehead.
Offer a glass(silver/copper/bronze) of water, coconut, flowers and fruits. You can also offer neivedhiyum like sundal. In my native, it is a common practice to offer puffed rice and fried gram mixture to the Goddess on the day of Ayudha Poojai.
Light a Diya, and samburani/ incense sticks.
Pray soulfully to the Goddess to bestow her blessings on you, your children, and your family for good knowledge, excellence in kids’ academics, and prosperous business.
Sing hymns that are dedicated to Goddess Saraswati.
Do karpoor aarti.
Let the books and the tools that you have kept under the Goddess stay overnight. The next morning, take bath and remove the flowers. Put Ma Saraswati’s picture back in her usual place. Now, you can take the books and systems and whatever you have placed the day before for the pooja. You can use the water in the glass for your home plants.
